Idea Cellular, an Aditya Birla Group company, has launched GSM services in the north eastern state of Assam. The company will launch services in other circles of North East, in Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh, by later this year.
In Assam, the company’s services will be available across 13 districts – Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Cacher, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Kamrup, Karbi Anglong, Kokrajhar, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sibsagar, Sonitpur and Tinsukia – at the launch phase. Assam has a population of 32 million and a low mobile tele-density of 22 per cent, Idea Cellular said in a statement.
Idea Cellular will double its network to 500 cell sites to cover 19 districts, including 56 major towns and over 1,400 villages in Assam by March 2010. It will also set up a network of 450 cell sites in the North East region by March 2010.
“Launch of services in Assam is the last major milestone in Idea’s national expansion journey. The successful achievement of our mission to become a pan-India operator can be attributed to a sharp and focused management strategy; excellent execution in network rollout, customer service and innovative product offerings; and the faith of 53 million subscribers across the country. Idea’s world-class mobile telephony services will now be available to over 32 million people in Assam, connecting them with the rest of the country, and driving mobile penetration in the region,” Ambrish Jain, Director – Operations, Idea Cellular said.
The company will set up several customer service centres and a robust retail network of exclusive ‘My Idea Stores’, ‘Idea Points’ and other outlets. This retail and service network will grow to over 4,420 retail outlets and 35 exclusive showrooms in Assam, by March 2010.
It has also started an portal – Asomi Aai Rupohi – in Assamese language for the mobile users in the region. The portal will offer Assamese songs, movie reviews and other content targeted for the youth. Idea subscribers in Assam can also avail other VAS and GPRS services like Idea Music Station, Yahoo Messenger, Dialer Tones. It will also introduce a range of affordable tariff plans for mobile users in Assam.
