The GSM service providers’ body, Cellular Operators’ Association of India (COAI), has warned subscribers of fraudulent calls purporting to be from mobile service providers. The calls are believed to be originating from Pakistan and Dubai numbers, according to the association.
The GSM operators in the country have added a total of 10 million new subscribers in October this year, increasing the total number of connections to 355.2 million. In comparison, the user addition is 14 per cent higher compared with the 9 million users added in September, according to data released by the Cellular Operators’ Association of India (COAI).
The new subscriber additions of GSM service providers were lower in September, with nine operators adding 8.59 million users in September, compared with 9.75 million raked in during the previous month of August.
The Indian telecom associations will meet the government officials and urge them not to burden the telecom sector by increasing levies under the proposed Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime. The GST regime would be effective from April 1, 2010.
GSM service provider Idea Cellular has added 1.54 million new subscribers in August, boosting its total subscriber base to 50.05 million and consolidating its position as the fifth largest operator in the country.
