Aircel, the Indian subsidiary of Malaysia’s Maxis Group, will launch GSM services in the north Indian telecom service areas of Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan in April. The company has selected Nokia Siemens Networks to supply the GSM network and manage it for four years, in a deal worth over $300 million.
“At Aircel, we have set ourselves ambitious goals to become not only a strong nationwide service provider, but also the operator of choice for millions of Indian subscribers with our proposition of high-quality services,” Aircel Chief Operating Officer Gurdeep Singh said.
“With Nokia Siemens Networks as our partner, we have launched networks in record time while delivering superior service quality and end-user experience to our customers. We are confident that the company will help us efficiently realise our targets yet again,” he added.
As part of the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will supply radio, core and microwave network equipment and help in roll out.

The change to 11-digit mobile numbers is unlikely to have any impact either on the operators or the industry, even though ‘customer disturbances’ are not ruled out.
Sterlite Technologies Limited, a global provider of transmission solutions for the telecom and power industries, will double its optical fibre capacity to 12 million km by the end of this current financial year.
