Aircel, in which Malaysia’s Maxis Communications Berhad holds a 74 per cent stake, intends to use the proceeds from the sale of its 17,500 towers to increase its telecom subscriber base to 100 million by 2012 from the present 31 million. On Thursday, Aircel had sold off its telecom towers to GTL Infrastructure for Rs 8,400 crore. Aircel, India’s fifth largest GSM operator is also expanding its presence to all the 22 circles in the country.

GTL Infrastructure Ltd is to acquiring Aircel’s tower business under a deal worth $1.8 billion (Rs 8,160 crore), according to reports in a section of the press. GTL, backed by a $1.2-billion (Rs 5,440 crore) loan from State Bank of India (SBI), has clinched the transaction.
