Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) will expand and upgrade Bharti Airtel’s, India’s number one telecom services provider, 2.5 G network by 50 per cent across circles, under a $700-million GSM network contract signed between the companies. The contract includes network planning, implementation and project management, handling of local logistics and materials, and system integration for the base transceiver stations.

Bharti Airtel recorded a net profit of Rs 2,237 crore during the quarter ended December 31, 2009, down by 3.75 per cent, compared with Rs 2,321 crore recorded for the same period a year ago. The company’s revenue rose to Rs 10,304 crore from Rs 9846 crore in the September quarter.

Under the agreement, Bharti Airtel will make a fresh investment of $300 million to expand Warid Telecom’s operations, while it will get management and board control of the company.
