Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has thrown his weight behind the proposed $23-billion alliance Bharti Airtel and South Africa’s MTN Group, according to reports in the international media. “I did mention this to President (Jacob) Zuma. I sincerely hope this deal goes through,” Prime Minister said addressing a press conference at Pittsburgh, where the Indian premier attended the G20 Summit.
South Africa’s MTN Group, which was in discussions with India’s Bharti Airtel, will continue to explore opportunities in the region and would talk to firms like Singapore Telecom (SingTel).
Not withstanding the economic downturn, the MTN Group recorded a 30.6 per cent rise in net profit to R9 billion and 24.2 per cent increase in revenues to R57.3 billion during the six-month period ended June 30, 2009, compared with the same period of previous year.
