Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has called for doubling the rural tele-density from the present 20 per cent in the next three years. He also said India would implement Mobile Number Portability early next year, while the government would set up seven Telecom Centers of Excellence.
The total subscriber base in the country has crossed 500 million-mark in September this year, much ahead of the projected date next year. The industry had earlier predicted subscriber base to cross 500 million by the end of 2010.
Telecom Minister A Raja, at a meeting with telecom companies’ officials has proposed for a further reduction in Mobile Termination Charges to 10 paise per minute. Even though, the move would bleed telecom companies, it would help a 15 per cent reduction of call rates.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will conduct auctions for 3G spectrum across 22 telecom circles in the country on January 14, 2010. A pre-bid conference would be held on November 16, 2009, according to information posted on DoT’s website. The revised auction date is over two weeks later than the original plan announced by the Empowered Group of Ministers (eGoM).
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today searched Department of Telecommunications (DoT) office at Sanchar Bhawan in New Delhi to collect documents in connection with awarding of 2G licences. The national investigation agency conducted searches at DoT’s Wireless Planning Cell (WPC) and Deputy Director General for Access Services offices.
Dishnet Wireless, a subsidiary of Aircel group and a GSM operator in northern and eastern circles, had 20 congested points of interconnection (POIs), making it the most congested network in the country. This was followed by state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) with congestion in 8 POIs and Vodafone in 6 POIs, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said in its Network/PoI Congestion Report for April, May and June 2009.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, or TRAI, has issued a consultation paper seeking industry views on issues like spectrum management and limiting the number of operators per telecom service area in the country. Etisalat DB Telecom’s proposed acquisition of Allianz Infratech has run into bad weather, with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) opposing it citing the recent three-year lock-in period clause. According to reports by in the Indian media (Hindu Business Line and DNA Money have reported the story), DoT has informed the companies that the merger “cannot be permitted before the lock-in period of three years”.
