Aircel, the Indian subsidiary of Malaysia’s Maxis Group, will launch GSM services in the north Indian telecom service areas of Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan in April. The company has selected Nokia Siemens Networks to supply the GSM network and manage it for four years, in a deal worth over $300 million.

“At Aircel, we have set ourselves ambitious goals to become not only a strong nationwide service provider, but also the operator of choice for millions of Indian subscribers with our proposition of high-quality services,” Aircel Chief Operating Officer Gurdeep Singh said.

“With Nokia Siemens Networks as our partner, we have launched networks in record time while delivering superior service quality and end-user experience to our customers. We are confident that the company will help us efficiently realise our targets yet again,” he added.

As part of the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will supply radio, core and microwave network equipment and help in roll out.

The GSM operators in the country added 13.7 million users, taking the total number of GSM users to 394.2 million as on January 30, 2010. Bharti Airtel, the country’s number one operator both in terms of subscriber numbers and revenues, added 2.85 million new mobile subscribers in January, according to data released by Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).

Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) will expand and upgrade Bharti Airtel’s, India’s number one telecom services provider, 2.5 G network by 50 per cent across circles, under a $700-million GSM network contract signed between the companies. The contract includes network planning, implementation and project management, handling of local logistics and materials, and system integration for the base transceiver stations.

Reliance Communications (RCom) will shortly launch Mobile Applications Store in India, accessible through its data portal RWorld. Reliance Applications Store allows customers to browse and download applications, both paid and free, through a controlled environment. Developers across the world can develop, publish and promote programs and applications through a single mother portal, RCom said in a statement.
